About Us
Maxor Centre for Alcohol Abuse Prevention:
Maxor Centre for Alcohol Abuse Prevention is a Port
Harcourt, Nigerian based NGO specializing in Alcohol Harm Prevention and Control
Advocacy. Maxor provides leadership and resource channel needed to prevent
children and the vulnerables in our communities from abusing alcohol, and to
help persons who are addicted to recover and to protect our families and
communities from the dangers of alcohol abuse. Our special contribution is to
children and the youth in our communities.
Youth - Our Special Focus:
The WHO European Charter on Alcohol adopted in 1995
explicitly states that – “all children and adolescents have the right to grow up
in an environment protected from the negative consequences of alcohol
consumption and to the extent possible, from the promotion of alcohol
beverages”.
This rightly applies to all youth across the world. Sadly,
this is becoming unattainable the world over. Not only are children in most
developing countries growing up in an environment where they are bombarded with
positive images of alcohol, but our children are a key target of the marketing
practices of the alcohol industry.
The Need for More Effort:
Alcohol abuse results in shorter life expectancies and
higher mortality rates. Our youth have increased chances of illness and early
death from damaged liver, intestines, gastrological and endocrine systems,
heart, nervous and respiratory systems, the throat and esophagus and from
cancer. Alcohol is known to compromise the immune system and wide range of
medical drugs. Beyond all these, drinkers suffer increased risk of accidental
injury to themselves and others from stupor, distorted perception, impaired
motor control and psychosis. The associated social and medical cost are just too
enormous to be ignored.
It is compelling that the adults must protect and guide the
youth to fruitful succession, hence we are constrained to campaign for improved
awareness of the harm associated with alcohol drinking, especially to the youth
of all countries of the world and more especially to the youth of Nigeria.
