Support and Sponsorship:
The above statements are the various agenda we have set as
goals in our efforts to reduce alcohol abuse and its attendant harm in our
communities. For them to become more than a set of pious aspirations will
require a social movement of support, extending into the various governmental
agencies and out into the wider society. Helping to create that wider support is
the task we have assigned all concerned organizations and individuals. It is all
about overcoming the major obstacles to alcohol harm prevention and alcohol
control policy. Fighting to reduce alcohol abuse requires resources, which seem
a never-ending problem. Ample resources are available but perhaps no sufficient
allocation is made toward solving the problems of alcohol abuse. Alcohol should
be seen as a poverty issue in developing countries such as ours. We do not have
the resources of the industrialized nations. Therefore, it is more cost
effective to improve health and spend on prevention rather than on treatment,
which we cannot afford anyway.
Maxor Centre for Alcohol Abuse Prevention will continuously
identify and connect individual initiatives and programmes, policy and alcohol
harm prevention organizations to ensure the success of our projects. To achieve
our goals, we need professional partners. We will not relent in networking with
credible associates whose objectives are similar to ours.
It is pertinent to quote the words of Her Majesty Queen
Silvia of Sweden on the Swedish launch of international drug prevention fund –
(THE GLOBE, NUMBER 2, 1994): “Great work is being accomplished by others in this
field and the true dedication of many individuals, governments,
inter-governmental organizations. Despite all efforts, the situation is not
improving. Obviously additional efforts are required”.
There is no doubt that far more efforts are required. The
alcohol companies thirsting for market have intensified their market expansion
strategies. With huge financial resources at their disposal, they buy favourable
portrayal of alcohol and alcohol culture in the news and entertainment media to
convince the public, especially the youth, of the “merits” of alcohol drinking.
The most reliable counter efforts are dedicated preventive campaigns -
education, supported by government control measures.
Funding:
For the funding of our campaign projects, we will rely on
sponsorship and donations from public and private sources and on the goodwill of
concerned citizens of Nigeria and the International Communities.
